You must be livin' under a rock if you don't know who Alanis Morissette is. As one of the most influential female artists in the 21st century, the Canadian superstar had sold over 85 million albums worldwide, won a total of seven Grammy and 12 Juno awards, and toured all over the world — an enormous feat she did not think of achieving when she started out in the early 90s. The Ontario, Canada native may not have thought of making it astronomically big in the alternative music scene, but music lovers had already known that she would achieve superstardom just when her breakout hit "You Ought to Know" invaded the airwaves.
It was very clear that the alternative music scene was in for a sea change when the hit song from her groundbreaking album "Jagged Little Pill" broke through on the global stage in 1995. At the age of 19, Alanis Morissette was a newcomer to the rock scene and provided the song's passionate vocals. Despite the abundance of alternative and grunge rock singers during the heyday of the '90s, nobody sounded quite like her or conveyed her level of lyrical genius. The album's skyrocketing success foreshadowed the immense success she would have in the coming years. In 1998, she followed the success of "Jagged Little Pill" with "Supposed Foremer Infatuation Junkie." The album broke the record for sales in its first week by a female act and eventually achieved triple platinum status in the US and quadruple platinum in Canada. "Under the Rug" was released in 2002, "So-Called Chaos" in 2004, and "Flavors of Entanglement" in 2008.
Alanis released only one album in the 2010s. "Havoc and Bright Lights," released in 2012, peaked at number 1 in both the US Top Rock Albums and US Independent Albums Charts. She then released two more albums. The latest of which is "The Storm Before the Calm" in 2022. All these albums continued to showcase Alanis Morissette's evolution as an artist while maintaining the raw honesty and introspection that defined her earlier work.
As Alanis Morissette continued to navigate the ever-changing landscape of the music industry, her legacy remained firmly intact. Her ability to connect with listeners on a deeply personal level and her unwavering commitment to artistic authenticity solidified her as a timeless and influential artist, proving that her impact would extend far beyond the eras that initially witnessed her rise to stardom.
